Out of touch Mitt Romney denigrates children of gays and lesbians | Why Gay Republicans and particularly Clarke Cooper and the Log Cabin Republicans ought to be ashamed of their endorsement of Mitt Romney

By Melanie Nathan, October 31, 2012.

Mitt Romney, when governor of Massachusetts, refused to allow birth certificate forms to be reprinted to accommodate the children of gay and lesbian couples, isolating and ostracizing our children. This  unabashed discrimination caused untold hardship  for these children and their families.

Documents exposed by  reporter  Murray Waas  show how Romney required hospitals to instead cross out “mother” or “father” on the birth certificates of children born to same-sex couples and write in, with a pen, “second parent,” and only with the permission of Romney’s office.

This horrific discrimination was not only mean spirited and religiously driven, it also defied the legal parity in the Massachusetts marriage law, whereby same-sex couples were allowed to marry at the time he made the offensive remarks indicated in the Video clip below.

Michelangelo Signorile, Editor-at-large, HuffPost Gay Voices , described  the video below in an article headed “Shocking Footage Emerges of Mitt Romney Spouting His Bigoted Bile Against Gays (VIDEO).”

Romney believes that “every child has a right to a mother and a father” Of course he is absolutely correct about that – but what about the children who do not have mothers and fathers? Does that mean they are not entitled to their de facto and in some cases de Jure families?  An extremely out of touch Romney  does nothing more than denigrate the parallel rights of some children. Those who have two mothers and those who have two fathers.  Does Romney honestly think that discriminating against our families will make our families disappear into thin air?

What makes this worse is Romney’s admission that he he is defiant of the  law in his own State, allowing same-sex couples to marry.  On the one hand he has said marriage rights should be left to the individual States and in the next breathe he refuses to uphold protocols that follow the law in his own State. This man’s quest for the Presidency must be stopped at all costs.

Melanie Nathan co-producer of GAY U.S.A. the Movie said: “This is vulgar, insulting and about as UN American as you can get. I have two young daughters.  They have every right to their two mommy family as someone else has to their mommy/daddy family. The policies of Romney hurt children – over one million gay couples in the USA have kids and the numbers are growing.  Having to hear this hateful rhetoric  hurts my children.  This speech tells us who Romney is as a person and he is not of the ilk that many Americans find acceptable for president of a great country like ours, founded upon the quest for freedom. He has the audacity to think that his so called values, based in large on his own religion which is entirely different to mine, represents that of other Americans.  To my way of thinking what he says is more than discrimination, it is tantamount to telling me and my family that we have no right to exist.”
