TOWSON, MARYLAND – In a speech at Towson University last night,openly gay Republican Presidential candidate Fred Karger issued a challenge to three of the other four remaining GOP candidates when he asked that the leaders of the pack renounce their NOM pledge against marriage equality for same-sex couples in the United States.

“Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich — you should immediately disavow the National Organization for Marriage’s Pledge that each of you signed.  We now have the proof that NOM is an unethical and deceitful operation,” Karger announced to the class on Presidential Politics.

For two and a half years, the National Organization for Marriage has been under investigation by the State Ethics Commission and Attorney General of Maine for money laundering accusations. Earlier this week a federal judge unsealed four scathing documents that had been subpoenaed from NOM.  These formerly “confidential” papers from 2009 show all the lies and possible illegal campaign activates that NOM has committed for many years.

The documents discuss detailed campaign strategy and the millions of dollars to be spent in upcoming gay marriage battles in Maine, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and Washington, DC.

Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich all signed this horrific and divisive pledge which commits them to take certain actions as President.

The NOM Pledge states:

Support and send to states a federal marriage amendment.

Defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court.

Appoint judges and an attorney general who will respect the original meaning of the Constitution.

Appoint a Presidential Commission to investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters.

Support legislation that would return to the people of D.C. their right to vote for marriage.

Note, Fred Karger, who is also founder of Rights Equals Rights, filed his original sworn complaint with the Maine Ethics Commission on August 24, 2009, accusing NOM of money laundering in its campaign to overturn Maine’s recently passed marriage equality law.

In his Towson speech, Karger also told students, “Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich should immediately repudiate the unethical and potentially illegal campaign activities of the National Organization for Marriage. “In the final three months of this long and hard-fought campaign for the Republican nomination for President, let’s work together toward equality for all Americans,” concluded Karger.

Karger and Ron Paul remain the only two active candidates to refuse to sign NOM’s pledge.
