This morning same-sex marriage became legal in the State of New York and Kristina Lapinski of GAY USA, the Movie, was there to add her historic footage to the hundreds of hours of film already collected for the documentary planned for release, Summer 2012. The video in this article shows highlights from the occasion in Manhattan. (www.kickstarter.com/projects/kristinalapinski/gay-usa-gay-rights-in-america)
A milestone day, with same-sex marriages at Niagra Falls and across the boroughs of New York City, there is no doubt the fervor will continue over the weeks to come and beyond, as thousands turn up in New York with the promise of mega gay wedding dollars to add to the State coffers.
Over 800 couples married in New York City, from 12.01 AM onwards today, couples across the State kissed in unison, as they said vows that had been in their hearts for decades, waiting for this equitous right to marry.
In a moving ceremony, with Joel Gray singing from Cabaret, as family looked on and daughters held their hands, Mayor Bloomberg conducted the marriage ceremony of his staffer Jonathan to longtime partner John, “Today in this City and in this State history takes an important step forward by allowing everyone in this state to participate. It has taken New York a long time…in every way you deserve to be recognized equally under the eye of the law.”
While religious congregations may still choose to turn couples away in New York, the Gay and Lesbian community will enjoy equality under State law. However, until such time as the Defense of Marriage Act is repealed, these couples will not share in the over 1,000 federal rights which heterosexual couples are able to benefit from.
If you are celebrating a marriage, witnessing an event, a guest, a friend, family – and anyone who cares, please call speaker Boehner tomorrow – and insist that he puts the Respect for Marriage Act on the Agenda so finally Gays and Lesbians can have full equality under the laws of the United States.
