When the designer of the South African Gay Flag announced “Joburg (Johannesburg) pride will be a sea of little Gay flags of South Africa. It will mean that the design will finally be a flying across all provinces of South Africa’s national pink community, uniting us all,” little did he know that activists from GAY USA would ensure the flag’s presence in the hallways of the New York City’s Clerk offices, as hundreds of gay and lesbian couples lined up to marry on the historic first day of same-sex marriages in the State of New York.
The Gay Flag of South Africa (GFSA) was launched at the Mother City Queer Project has gained massive momentum in the past six months. The flag was first launched at a few clubs in De Waterkant, Cape Town’s gay village, then Cape Town Pride, followed by events along the Garden Route up to Port Elizabeth. Spokesperson Ms. Lola Fine notes “will take the Gay Flag of South Africa to Durban Pride next week. We will then tour to Nelson Mandela Bay Pride , culminating in Joburg Pride as the final piece of the puzzle.”
The GFSA has also been a pivotal symbol for LGBTI activism for gay rights in South Africa, when its designer Eugene Huge Brockman and spokesperson Henry Banjes supported Ndumie Funda of Luleki Sizwe and Melanie Nathan, at the talks with the Department of Justice, giving rise to the newly appointed LGBTI task force on hate crimes in South Africa.
The GFSA was also present at London Pride this year and now can tally New York with further pride.
